Marshall & Podersky Cup Inter-club Competition

Marshall/ Podersky Captains

Brenda Delfs Laraine Stuart

Every year at the spring meeting of the Leduc Ladies Golf Association, there is opportunity for players to sign up for the Marshall Cup and the Podersky Cup. You must have a registered Golf Canada handicap with recently posted scores to participate in the Marshall and Podersky Cups.

Marshall Cup

The Marshall Cup is a match play interclub tournament that takes place over three Mondays and one Sunday in May and June. This year there are 13 clubs, both private and public in the greater Edmonton area participating in the Marshall Cup. On each of those dates each club presents two teams of four players. Two A team players (those with lower handicaps) play at home and two go to play at another club. Two B team players (those with higher handicaps) play at home and two go away. Although the spirit of the Marshall Cup is friendly competition, players should be familiar with and adhere to the RCGA rules of play.

Podersky Cup

The Podersky Cup is played as a 2-ball foursome, a match in which a team of two plays another team of two, each side playing one ball with alternate shots. On each of those dates, each club presents four teams of two players with two teams playing at home and two teams playing at another participating club.

The Marshall and Podersky are great opportunities to experience friendly competition. You may get to play other courses in the area that you have never experienced as well as hosting visiting ladies from other courses, introducing them to our great course.

If you are interested in participating this year there will be signup sheets at the Drop in Night on April 24/2024 from 4pm to 8pm. If you are not able to attend the meeting you can let us know you are interested by contacting either Brenda or Laraine.

In order to participate in either the Marshall or Podersky you must have a current registered handicap with Golf Canada with recent scores posted. To register with Golf Canada see Tami in the office.

If you sign up for either the Marshall or Podersky or both, every effort is made to have you play in at least one match, either at home or away. However, depending on the number of players who sign up, the dates they are available, their handicap, etc. there is no guarantee - you may get one match, two matches or none at all.

Visitation Days

The Leduc Ladies will be hosting the Ladies from one other Club as well as visiting another Club. As space is limited participation will be determined by a lottery in 2024. Signup sheets will be available at Ladies League Registration Evening.

If you have any questions or need further clarification on the Marshall/ Podersky or Visitation Days please feel free to contact one of our two Club Captains. The 2024 dates for these events have not yet been confirmed.

Handicaps

Why establish a handicap?

For many golfers, the idea of getting a handicap established is very intimidating. However, the process is very easy and can open doors for playing in competitions. A handicap can be established by first registering at our club through your LLGA, then each time you play a round of 9 or 18 you enter your score online at the Golf Canada website www.golfcanada.ca After you have entered ten rounds your handicap will be tabulated and adjusted every time you enter a score thereafter.

Handicaps are not solely for competitive players. As we all know, we tend to play golf more against ourselves than against anyone else. Tracking your handicap really lets you know the strong parts of your game, as well as the areas that could use some work.

As a member of the Edmonton Golf Association (EGA), the LLGA encourages our members to compete in various events such as the Marshall/Podersky Cups, Ladies Amateur and Senior Ladies Amateur. All of these events require an established handicap to participate.

In addition, if you decide to play in one of the above mentioned competitions, having a handicap levels the playing field for golfers of all levels. If you are a high handicapper playing a lower handicapped golfer, you will be given a reprieve on very hard holes. Conversely, if you are a low handicapper playing a higher handicapped golfer, you will be expected to bring your best game because there will be no breaks for you.
